A book I had to take my time with. Despite having a structure and plot, it still felt a bit abnormal reading through, and I like the description of this being a guidebook to the planet. It’s always shocking to remember that Le Guin was putting out books like this in the 1960’s, seeing as how some of the topics and discussions are still controversial today. Overall I was mostly impressed just by how deep of a world she is able to craft with such a relatively short book. Each scene feels so intentional and written with purpose, no filler anywhere. Not a fun, lighthearted book but still well worth reading.

The Left Hand of Darkness Summary
This is a hard book to summarize.
Genly Ai is an Envoy from the Ekumen, a society of worlds spread out in the universe united under the goal of sharing learning and culture. He has come to Winter (known also as Gethen) to learn about the people and invite the nations of Gethen to join the Ekumen. The planet is called Winter because it is very cold, still seeming to be in an ice age. He is currently in the kingdom of Karhide, in the capital of Erhenrang. The prime minister Therem Harth rem ir Estraven (Estraven), has managed to arrange a meeting with King Argaven XV. The people of Gethen are confusing to Genly, as they do not have gender but once a month enter “Kemmer”, and will assume the role of either male or female to have children. They also have something called “Shifgrethor”, which is like an unspoken code or standing.
Many people believe King Argaven to be mad. Genly meets with him and it is unproductive. Then Estraven is declared a traitor and forced to flee Karhide for the neighboring nation of Orgoreyn. Genly also leaves Erhenrang since he was close to Estraven and the new regent Tibe does not like him. He travels and meets various people, eventually stopping with some Foretellers (people who can actually predict the future), led by the weaver Faxe. Genly asks them if in 5 years Gethen will be a member of the Ekumen and they say yes. He travels on.
Estraven has a harrowing journey and almost dies, but reaches Orgoreyn and lives among the working class before being pulled back into the political world when he is recognized. The ruling class of Orgoreyn acts more as a bureaucracy with 33 commosals sharing power. Genly travels into Orgoreyn but their is an attack (Foray) by Karhide forces and he gets lumped in with other victims, before officials learn who he is and spirit him away to meet some of the Commosals. Genly tells them about his alien nature and his mission and seems to be well received, but is never show to the public and seems to be kept hidden. He meets again with Estraven, who warns him to be careful.
Genly wakes up one night and is taken prisoner. He is transported inhumanely in a cold truck with many others to Pulefen Farm, a labor camp. There he is forced to work and is drugged and interrogated several times, but the drugs have a harsh effect on his alien body and he nearly dies. Estraven learns where Genly is and breaks him out of prison after gathering supplies. He uses a trance like state of increased strength called Dothe, but this requires him to be weak for a while after. Together Genly and Estraven recover and plan their next move. They must travel north in an arctic ski trip to evade Orgoreyn soldiers and reach Karhide, but then Genly must find a way to make the king unbanish Estraven.
They embark on a long, difficult snow journey covering over 800 miles in harsh weather with limited rations. Over this journey they grow much closer and learn about each other and their respective cultures. They finally make it to civilization and are welcomed by the people of a small village. They make a plan and Genly contacts his starship and asks the 11 others aboard to come land and help him. Shortly after they are trying to reach Karhide and Estraven sacrifices himself and gets shot by border guards to allow Genly to be taken back to Erhenrang. The governments of both countries change because of this, and Genly’s people come down and Gethen joins the Ekumen. Genly struggles greatly with his grief over Estraven’s death and goes to visit his family, where he meets his son and agrees to share his story of their travels over the ice. THE END.
