Reminded me of an adult version of the hunger games. A cool dystopian setting, with a bit of mystery as to how we reached this point and what is going on behind the scenes. Went into this knowing genuinely nothing and was pleasantly surprised as it went along. The end felt a bit anticlimactic, and didn’t set up for future books as well as I expected. Looking at the blurbs for the rest of the series I don’t think I will read the books but do want to watch the TV show.

Silo #1
Wool Summary
Holston, sheriff of a bunker called the silo, breaks one of the community's biggest laws and tells his deputy, Marnes, that he wants to go outside. His wife Allison said the same thing three years ago after finding some old code hidden in the IT servers that showed how to generate images. The silo has cameras on the outside (it is buried underground) that show the dismal and grey surrounding landscape. Holston suspects that those camera images are a lie. The punishment for bad crimes is “cleaning”, going outside and cleaning the cameras then not being allowed back in. Holston is sent outside and sees a beautiful green world with a blue sky. He is ecstatic and cleans the cameras then goes off to find his wife, but suddenly can’t breath. He manages to break off his helmet and sees the bright world was a lie, and the world truly is a wasteland.
Mayor Jahns and Deputy Marnes now have to find a new sheriff, and think they have found a good candidate in Juliette Nichols (Jules). Jules works as a mechanic in the down deep, the bottom section of the silo. On the way down they stop to visit her father in a nursery and Bernard, the head of IT. Mayor Jahns gets mad at Bernard because he already told a different candidate, Peter Billings, that he could be sheriff. Bernard does not want Juliette because she is from the down deep and she requisitioned some materials from IT years ago.
Jahns and Marns convince Juliette to leave her job despite her talent as a mechanic to become sheriff, but in exchange they agree to have a “power holiday” for a week so that they can fix the main generator. On the way back up Bernard is angry about their choice and the power cutbacks so he poisons Marnes’ canteen, which the mayor had been drinking from. Mayor Jahns dies before reaching the top floors.
Juliette begins her duties as sheriff with a lot of turbulence due to this. Bernard steps in as a temporary mayor, and then shortly after deputy Marnes hangs himself out of grief over the mayor's death, who he secretly loved. Bernard replaces him with Peter Billings. Juliette becomes obsessed with understanding why Holsten went outside, and asks her friend in IT, Scottie, to give her info. During her late nights reading information Jules meets Lukas Kyle, an IT worker who loves to study the stars. Scottie discovers what Allison did, that there is code to render fake images, however he also realizes that the resolution only makes sense for a screen about 8 inches by 2 inches, not the massive camera monitors. Shortly after this Scottie is found dead from “suicide”.
Bernard first demotes Juliette and sends her back to mechanical for some reason, then pins Scottie's death on her and sentences her to cleaning. Jules is first able to meet with an old, eccentric electrician, Walker. She tells him about what Scottie found and that she thinks the heat tape IT uses for outside suits is designed to fail. Walker works with the people in Supply and manages to get quality heat tape sent up to IT instead, in secret. Juliette is brought to her cleaning and fitted for a suit, but because of Walker it hopefully won’t fail right away. She goes out the airlock and sees the beautiful world and realizes the 8x2 inch monitor is in her helmet making the world look good. She does not clean the cameras and instead wanders over the hills and away. We cut to Bernard who goes to a secret room and uses a phone and says “Silo 1, this is Silo 18, we may have a problem”.
Juliette wanders over the hills and thinks for a second she went in a circle, since she finds a similar silo outside just with more dead bodies. She figures out there must be multiple silos, but is running out of air and barely forces open the airlock and gets inside. This silo is empty and abandoned and she has to hunt for food and water. After searching for a while she meets another survivor, who she calls Solo. Solo tells her 34 years ago this silo (17) revolted and its people tried to get out, resulting in almost everyone dying. He shows her the same secret rooms Bernard used earlier, and Juliette calls Silo 18, her home.
Bernard realizes he needs to train a replacement to handle all his secrets, and recruits Lukas to the job, not knowing he and Jules have a connection. Lukas is shown the secret of the multiple silos and hears Juliette call Bernard. Bernard tells Lukas he is going to stay locked down in this secret room (which has a ton of books about the old world) until Bernard is sure he will keep the secret. Meanwhile, Knox, the head of mechanical, has begun to foment an insurrection. He thinks Bernard has too much power and knows Jules was innocent. He gathers his people and they begin to march up to IT to get a transfer of power, either peacefully or by violence.
Juliette and Solo work to fix up silo 17, Lukas and Juliette talk on the phone when possible and Lukas keeps learning about the world, and Knox gets help from supply and nears IT. Bernard is warned they are coming and arms his men, bringing out secret semi-auto guns (much better than what mechanical could make). Using their better tech they kill Knox and many other members of the uprising and chase them back down to the down deep. Walker begins working on a radio and manages to get one working, which picks up chatter from other silos and he and some others figure out the secret.
Jules and Solo begin an ambitious plan to have her scuba down and get the water pumps working to unflood the silo, break out the old hidden digging machines, and make a tunnel to 18. While Juliette is underwater, Walker hears her radio chatter and is excited. Suddenly, the air compressor that was supplying Jules with air stops, and she barely makes it back to the surface without dying. She finds Solo bleeding from a head wound, and she finds some teenagers, children, and a baby hiding in a farm. They never explain how these kids came to be here. Jules talks to them and gets the whole team to work together. Walker talks to her on the radio and explains what is going on. Bernard figures out Lukas loved/loves Juliette and can’t be trusted and orders him sent to cleaning.
Juliette talks to Bernard on the radio, without them knowing Peter Billings can hear. They discuss the other silos and the people Bernard has killed. Jules puts on a suit and makes a blanket of heat tape and heads back to meet Lukas when he gets sent to cleaning. She arrives and enters the airlock with him, which will be filled with fire to burn away any toxic outside chemicals. She tries to protect them both under the blanket but he crawls out and she is badly burned. Once the fire stops she realizes it was Bernard, not Lukas, with her.
Jules is badly hurt and recovers slowly in Silo 18. She wakes up and meets with Lukas and Peter. When Peter heard the truth he freed Lukas and arrested Bernard. Juliette has been elected mayor by the people and wants to tell them the truth. THE END.
